Vintage steel and gold Rolex bubbleback chronometer with date from 1956, this is a rare highly collectable watch referred to as the big bubble back or the ovettone (also sometimes called ovetti, ovetto) because of the convex case back that was designed to accommodate the automatic winding mechanism. The mint condition black dial has been professionally refinished in recent years, looks very nice! The movement is a 10.5 ligne cal 296 (also referred to as cal 745),18 jewels plus the rotor has 2 jewels for a total of 20 jewels. The case is inscribed between lugs with the serial number 925524, and case reference number 6105. Total production of this watch was fairly low but actual number produced is not known, it is listed in The Cooksey Shugart book with two asterisks beside it indicating less that 2000 were made, but this is an estimate and has not been confirmed. Photos are not actual size of watch, it measures 35mm across (not including crown) x 44mm lug to lug. Watch is fit with a new leather bracelet.
